Ligonier Ministries has been releasing a yearly report called, The State of Theology. And what they have discovered is eye-opening and concerning.
Their findings show that among US evangelical Christians:
- 48% believe that God learns and adapts (changes).
- 56% believe that God accepts the worship of all religions.
- 43% believe that Jesus was a great teacher, but he was not God.
- 38% believe that religious belief is a matter of personal opinion; it is not about objective truth.
These are people in churches, friend. These are self-professing Christians.
And what their study showed about Americans as a whole? It's these same trends only slightly more pronounced.
You can bet that these same trends are predominant across the Western world.
I'll say it again: both church people and non-church people aren't being discipled by the church as much as they are by someone or something else.
The picture this all paints can feel grim.
But instead of only focusing on the enormous nature of the problem, I believe that the solution is more powerful than the problem.
In order for us to see things change, preachers like you and me must continue to develop our craft of biblical preaching and to renew our zeal for preaching biblically rich, gospel-infused sermons that confront and correct the narratives that people are beholden to from this culture.
