I get it.

My first sermon? I prepared it in the library of my Bible college. I was ecstatic about the opportunity. I knew this was what God called me to do–to preach His good news… the news that completely and utterly changed my life.

So I gave it my best shot.

I wrote what I thought was a good sermon.

And then Sunday came.

It was the Sunday evening service.

I was nervous and ready. And nervous.

I stood up at the pulpit with my manuscript.

…And proceeded to read–verbatim–that manuscript.

My first sermon was… not good.

And I knew it. I just didn’t really know what to do differently.

My second sermon was… ever-so-slightly better.

Fast forward to my 10th sermon and… I still wasn’t where I thought I should be.

And it was around that time that I decided to do everything I could to work on my preaching craft.

Because of what I’ve learned over the years, my sermon delivery isn’t dreadful, it’s actually quite engaging. At least that’s what people tell me.

But the changes I’ve experienced in my preaching didn’t come automatically. I had to work for them. Actually, let me say that more accurately: I had to work hard for them.

I believe you’re just some intentional, focused work away from dramatically improving in your preaching. But the first step toward improving is identifying what you need to work on first.

Some of the most common preaching struggles are these same ones that I struggled with too…

Scattered sermon prep… Do you feel like you lack a system and process for your sermon preparation? You’re not alone. But scattered sermon prep only leads to one thing: more stress.

A sermon with too many disconnected points… Do your messages lack an aim? This is very common. But this is hurting people’s ability to follow your messages and receive what God is saying through you.

Content that doesn’t touch people’s hearts… Your sermons are true, but is that enough? No. It’s not. A sermon must pierce people’s hearts. And the reason it doesn’t often happen isn’t because some people can do it and others can’t. It’s all about making some intentional tweaks.

Subpar sermon delivery… It’s common to struggle with delivery. It’s one of the most unnatural things to do. Think about it: how often do people do anything remotely close to preaching? You know, stand up and talk for 30ish minutes in front of a room of people… Comedians? Anyone else?

Lack of future sermon planning… Being week to week in what you’re going to preach only increases your stress. Even month to month for that matter. You have enough stress in your life and in your work.
